President John’s Message

As I write this, we still have turkey leftovers in our refrigerator.  Which reminds me that I am thankful for our members who volunteered in the last two weeks to host two very successful Rotary events - Career Day at Roswell High School and the Honor Air Basketball Tournament, also at Roswell High.  Many thanks to Kay Howell for organizing Career Day and all the folks who spoke that day about their careers.  And thanks to the team of Dave Young, Gene Beckham, Lynne Lindsay and Jack Wyche and all the volunteers who sold tickets and manned the hospitality suite for three days for the basketball tournament.

December is upon us, and it’s time to -

• Bring gifts for children served by North Fulton Community Charities this week and next.
• Sign up for our Holiday Party on December 9th.
• Warm up the vocal cords for Caroling on Canton Street on December 14th.
• And help lay wreaths at the graves of veterans as part of Wreaths Across America on December 17th.

You can find information and links below to sign up for these below.

Not only is this the season for giving, merry making, and parties, but it’s also Disease Prevention & Treatment Month for Rotary. This week we hear from a great community partner - Wellstar - about their new Cancer Center.  We welcome Dr. Mark McLaughlin as he speaks to us this Thursday.

New Cancer Center
Dec. 1 Speaker: Dr. Mark McLaughlin Wellstar N. Fulton

Excited to hear from Dr. Mark McLaughlin about the latest news on WellStar North Fulton's Cancer Center. All of us have been touched by cancer in some manner and we are so fortunate to have this center right here in our community.

Dr. Mark McLaughlin received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Duke University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He completed his surgical internship at Shands Teaching Hospital, College of Medicine at University of Florida, where he also completed his residency in radiation oncology. Dr. McLaughlin also holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Central Michigan University.

McLaughlin is board-certified in radiation oncology. In his spare time, he enjoys sports, travel, gardening, boating, martial arts and reading.

Cancer Care at Wellstar

People face cancer with confidence at Wellstar because of our multidisciplinary care model, physicians’ expertise and advanced treatments close to home. In fact, we have more than 300 healthcare providers that provide expert cancer care at convenient locations across Georgia.

WellStar's multidisciplinary teams surround patients and their families with knowledgeable and compassionate support. Specialty programs for patients are led by physicians with advanced training. Here, patients see leading specialists who are experts in their fields.

Wellstar invests in state-of-the-art technology and participates in clinical trials to give patients access to a variety of advanced treatments including minimally-invasive surgery, high precision radiation dosages by CyberKnife and TrueBeam delivery systems, intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC) as well as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies based on the latest advances in biomarker testing. Patients who qualify for clinical trials have access to groundbreaking treatments, often years before they are FDA-approved.

Because of Wellstar’s integrated approach to cancer treatment, our programs are nationally recognized by The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer and the Care Continuum Centers of Excellence (CCCOE), a program of the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, among others.

Past President - Harvey Smith - 2004-05

Rotary started on February 23, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois.  During Harvey Smith’s presidential year we celebrated RI’s 100th anniversary.  Our Leadership 2020 banquet keynote speaker was Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A.  Come find out what else happened in the Rotary year 2004-05 when we hear from Harvey Smith.   And get there early and check out scrapbook photos on the big screen before the meeting.
