FACING OUR FEARS!
As you know by now, I subscribe to Michael Hyatt’s Lead to Win blog and last week’s podcast was about FEAR and specifically facing our fears. Michael’s daughter and business partner, Megan, shared her fear of public speaking and how she battles this fear in a career that puts her in front of large audiences. At last week’s Entrepreneur Workshop, Dan Jourdan, our guest speaker, educated and entertained us with some valuable information on successful selling. One way to face the fear of selling (especially cold calling) is to SMILE! Dan says “SMILING WILL MAKE YOU MONEY!” I will go a step further and say that putting on a smile gives you confidence even when you are not confident! Ross Rossin shared with us earlier this year that a smile builds bridges. And, SMILING IS FREE! Another piece of Dan's advice, DO WHAT'S FREE! Go ahead--just SMILE BIG for 10 seconds right now and see how great you feel!

This Week's Speaker
Rodney Mims Cook, Jr., a graduate of Washington and Lee University and a scholar of the American Academy in Rome initiated the campaign to successfully save the 5000+ seat Fox Theatre at age 15! In 1974, he was a White House intern. In 1982, he established Rodney M. Cook Interests, a design/development company. In 1987, he established PolitesCook Architects which designed the Newington Cropsey Museum, NY, housing the largest American collection of Hudson River School paintings (Arthur Ross Award to founder). He is a Founding Trustee of The Prince of Wales’s Foundation for Architecture and organized the design and construction of the Princes’ Olympic Games Monument in Atlanta with Anton Glikine, et al. He is a charter signer of the Congress for the New Urbanism.
Cook is currently orchestrating the design for a memorial library in Washington, D.C. to Presidents John and John Quincy Adams and their wives Abigail and Louisa Johnson Adams.Cook’s design proposal with co-designer Michael Franck won the 2011 commendation prize for the National Civic Art Society Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial, also for Washington, D.C. This commendation resulted in Cook testifying before Congress.
In November of 2015, he was a keynote speaker at the “Master Plan for 21st Century Havana” Conference, which for the first time in Cuban history, Cuban citizens and international scholars and urbanists participated together to develop an independent and comprehensive holistic vision for the entire city. In 2016, he was a delegate to the Novus Summit in the United Nations General Assembly Room. Cook was a speaker at the Museum of the XXI Century and New Media Technologies: Limits of Freedom Conference at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2017. He established the Millennium Candler Peace, Justice, and Millennium Gate Prize Denmark Commission in 2017. Cook is the founder and president of the National Monuments Foundation, an organization that choreographed the design and construction of the Millennium Gate Museum in Atlanta.
Rodney Cook is on the boards of directors of the Hearst Foundation/Hearst Castle, California, Fox Theatre Incorporated, the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, the Savannah College of Art and Design, SCAD, and the American University of the Integrative Sciences. He has lectured at the University of Georgia, University of Virginia, University of Tennessee, Washington and Lee University, The Scott Room at the United States Senate, The Forbes yacht, Highlander, various waters, Hearst Castle, the Kremlin Armory, Tolstoy estate Yasnaya Polyana, Open Society Institute, Soros Foundation, Moscow, the Palm Beach Preservation Society Gruss Master Architect Lecture Series, National Building Museum, Washington DC, and the Russian Embassy, Washington.
Mr. Cook’s work has been published in Architectural Digest, Time Magazine, The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Financial Times of London, Pravda, Izvestia, The New Yorker, The Weekly Standard, Forbes and USA Today.
First Power of One Scholarship Awarded!
On March 7, 2019 at the Roswell Rotary Club meeting, Alexis Seith, a Senior at Centennial High School, received the first Power of One Scholarship. The Power of One Scholarship was created in honor of Roswell Rotarian Dave McCleary to recognize a Roswell student who has demonstrated the power of one person to do good in the world. Alexis was awarded $1500 from the Roswell Rotary Club. Alexis shared her power of one story with the club. After years of being a Girl Scout, she and her friends wondered if they were in the club just to have fun or to make a difference. Alexis wanted to make a difference.
After interviewing her grandfather who is a Vietnam War veteran, a seed was planted in her heart for veterans coming home from active duty. To spread awareness, she traveled, camera in hand, to the Veteran’s Empowerment Organization (VEO) in Atlanta and interviewed several veterans struggling with homelessness. She edited and posted a documentary video online and built a website detailing the specific problems veterans in Atlanta face, and the ways that an average person could help. She, then, started a club Students Serving Veterans at Centennial High School. The club collects supplies for veterans and delivers them to VEO. So far this year, Students Serving Veterans has collected over 1000 supplies for VEO. Alexis truly demonstrated how the power of one person can make a difference in the lives of many. Congratulations Alexis!
New Member Spotlight
Randy Taylor was born and raised in Atlanta. He went to Northside High School and then graduated from Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA. Randy also graduated from the School of Banking of the South at LSU. His first job was with C&S Bank. He has worked most banking jobs from Teller to Market President. At present Randy works as a Commercial Banker for Servis First Bank.
Randy and Tricia have been married for 27 years and live in Marietta. They have three kids; Joshua 23, Rachel 22 and John 16. Tricia has homeschooled all three kids. The Taylors have a rescue dog and Tricia and John foster 12 rescue cats for Town & Country Veterinary Clinic. The family attends Northlands Church.

River Clean-up Needs You
Roswell Rotary is proud to be a cleanup site sponsor for Sweep the Hooch – held April 6th, 9am to 12pm! Sweep the Hooch is an annual day of service to the Chattahoochee River watershed mobilizing volunteers on foot, in waders, or kayak/canoe paddlers to remove trash at locations throughout the watershed. Sweep the Hooch brings people together to give back to the mighty river that gives us so much. Last year, with the help of over 900 volunteers, we removed 24 TONS from our watershed. This is a great family event!

Roswell High School Construction
Mission:
To provide quality education to high school students focusing on closing the skills gap and empowering students to succeed in life after high school by fostering creativity and problem solving through the designing and building of projects.
Fast Facts:
- Founded during the 2013-2014 Academic Year.
- The gap in skilled workers has been identified as one of the significant risks to the construction industry today.
- Since its inception, the program has given hundreds of students the opportunity to experience firsthand working in the construction industry.
- The program engages construction industry veterans and plants the seed for students to choose construction careers, before and after college.
- Feeder programs have been established at the elementary and middle school levels, including Roswell North Elementary, Mimosa Elementary, Elkins Pointe Middle School and Crabapple Middle School.
- The RHS Construction Program is preparing “at risk” youth for jobs in “gap” areas with an expectation of real out-of-high school employment.
- The program gives “at risk” students a reason to stay in school and hope for their future.
